broody putting others off laying? **UPDATE**

Recommended Posts

Hi - I'm new to this forum, have had my 4 girls for 8 months and all was going well till one went broody about 10 days ago! Slowly the egg production went down hill and now i'm lucky if I get one a day at the moment. Found a soft shelled one in the run today (they have a decent sized run with a small bush in the middle and logs to stand on etc)

Would the broody one put off the others laying?

Have got a box to put her in but need to cut the wire to fit - never seem to have the time!!

Thanks and sorry for the questions!!

** Shes off the nest!!!! Solidary conefinement for a few days obviously worked!! She is out there now throughly enjoying the garden, dont think she liked missing out!!! ***

Hello Hannah and welcome to the forum!

I have moved this to the chicken section, so hopefully you will get more replies.

The broody hen will stop the others from laying, so it would be best to move her until she stops her broodiness or provide the others will another nest box to lay in.

If you do a search in the chicken section, they are lots of posts about broody hens :wink:

or try this link

Hope she snaps out of it soon.

Oh yes, she will stop the others laying. We had 15 chickens last year, one went broody - 2 eggs a day if we were lucky! This year the same hen was broody for a week before we moved her out and production was already on it's way down. The good thing is it only takes a week or so to get going again, mind you, if I had to barge past a grumpy, huffed up, stroppy fluffy knickered old bat with a sharp beak, I PROBABLY wouldn't be keen to get to the nest either!

Cut theat wire and move her out!!
