Ziggy
I came on here for 'two minutes' to ask a question... and it's nearly an hour since I logged on, and started to read quite a few posts... I'll never get any work done at this rate Anyway... we planted some flowers at the weekend, and OH then put slug pellets around them... Are those dangerous for chickens? The box says 'children and pets need not be excluded from treated area', but then cats and dogs are less likely to ingest these, whereas the hens are constantly pecking at the soil... should I not let them freerange for a while? What does everyone think?
Gallina
I wouldn't use slug pellets anywhere where there was the faintest chance of the hens getting near them. But presumably if you are protecting flowers, it is an area where the hens don't go? (Hens do a lot more damage than slugs, and a lot faster!) cluckbok
We definately wouldn't use them wherever the hens are going to be. We've only used them in our front garden (the hens only go in the back). Anyway, don't hens eat slugs? Ours love em!!
buffie
Sounds as if you've used 'growing success' eco friendly pellets? I wouldn't put any of them in their reach to be honest and absolutely not use the 'normal pellets'. Hope this helps BBx
Egluntyne
I seem to remember reading that OD'ing on slug pellets causes breathing problems in chickens. I can't find the article just now. If I do I'll post a link.
Ziggy
Thanks everyone, I'll have to just keep the hens away from that area... I wasn't too sure about using them, but OH went ahead with it anyway
