How Quickly Does Albendazole Work?

I have only recently got 4 chickens (arrived 3rd June) They seemed to have settled in well. One started laying but has not layed since Wednesday 11th. She is hunched, tail down and generally looking sorry for herself.

We have inspected her vent and all seems normal there and have tried to get olive oil and cod liver oil into her but this seems to have had no effect (Saturday and Sunday)... any tips on getting the Oil into her beak would be appreciated and advice on what could be wrong with her would be great

Could she have worms whilst the rest don't and so soon after receiving them from Omlet?

Her comb is also down and floppy

If her comb is down and floppy she is dehydrated and need urgent attention.

 

Pop to he chemist and get a child's medicine dosing syringe. Will cost you about a quid, and syringe some water sweetened with a drop of honey into her mouth very slowly so that she has a chance to swallow it rather than inhale it.

 

To be honest, I think a trip to the vet might be a good idea as she sounds very poorly and it could be any one of a number of things.

Yes your girl can have worms when the others dont. One of mine displayed these symptoms and perked up after worming.

 

Eglutine is absolutley right that she is dehydrated and could do with a little help with the syringe.

 

If I need to get cod liver oil into my girls I put it into some sweetcorn and mix it. It goes down without even touching the sides

How do I get the syringe into the beak?

Wrap her in a towel so that she can't flap.

 

If you can get someone to help you even better.

 

Gently prize open her beak and slip the syringe into the side.

 

Trickle the fluid in gently and give her time to swallow and catch her breath.

As i prepared the honey and water syringe my wife put a bowl of water down for her and she absolutely went mad for it - we watched her transform before our eyes and by the end of the evening she was back to her normal bossy self - thanks so much for the advice - you will be pleased to hear she seems to have made a full recovery!
