chickweed
I am planninng to grow vegetables on an area which has been lawn for the last 50 years. Is it better to remove the turf completely and add well rotted compost, or dig the turf over and allow my two chickens and winter weather to break it all up? Christian
I would get rid of the turf, pile it up somewhere upside down and it will make good compost next year. Dig over the area and put some compost in it. Leave it over winter and start planting early spring. If you have time to dig it over now, you could still grow salad plants etc in it. Some garden centres have cabbages and sprouts ready for planting too.
