Why are we getting less eggs

Recommended Posts

Hia Folks

I am sure there is probably a thread about this somewhere, I am just too lazy and short of time to look!

We had our two chickens Cilla and Daisy nearly 2 years ago (in October) they have always been good layers, but lately we are finding they are not as consistent as they used to be and it seems we get eggs every 2-3 days.

Why do you think this is? :?:

It could be that they are approaching the hennopause,.

Are they free ranging?

They could be laying somewhere other than in the nest box.

Are they having too many treats?

Why not keep them on just pellets for a few days and see if it makes a difference.

Have they been wormed recently?

If not, it might be a good idea to give them a course of Flubenvet.

Have you checked them for lice and mites?

If not, why not give them a good powdering with red mite powder. Lice and mites can sap the hens strength and stop them from laying.

How do I check for Lice and Mites and where do I get Flubenvet from?

Its getting so frustrating that they arent laying!!

I keep telling them I have some nice spuds and gravy that they can make friends with ;-)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought all hens particularly hybrids slowed down on egg laying after the first 1/2 years and have slightly larger eggs but less often?

I have planned to expect that in time but I guess all hens are different .. if these have never been wormed this sounds like a very starting point, as something I did within first month just in case! :D

I didnt realise they slowed down after the first 1 to 2 years :( Ours lay less often, and yes they are sometimes bigger eggs!!! It doesnt feel like they are earning their keep!!!

How long do chooks live for anyway?

Sorry I'm no expert but thats what I thought from my research... i'm sure someone else will be able to advise much better in case i'm wrong!

I think lifespan varies with breed and heard some 2 years to some 9! but again no expert so wouldn't like to advise to be honest..
