hasnett
hi everyone, i need some help getting grit into my girls! They free range all day everyday but 2 of the bantams keep laying softies....i bake their egg shells and mix it into their mash but in the summer they don't really eat the mash. Does anyone have any ingenoius tips for getting them to eat more grit? thanks, sx
Faye&Ant
hmm not sure. I leave a bowl of grit in their run for when they are in there and they gobble that quite easily, then when they are free ranging they obviously help themselves. Is it just eggshells you give them? Snowy
If they are point of lay, it is normal for them to lay a few softies as their egg laying tackle gets into the swing of things. However, it sounds as though they may have been laying for a while. If so, it may be worth trying some limestone flour (from ebay or pet shops - sold as a tortoise feed supplement). It is just calcium carbonate and is more easily absorbed into their system than calcium from oyster shells or grit. I just mix a spoonful into each grub full of pellets when needed. WitchHazel
Limestone flour is also available from all horsey shops, as it's a common horse supplement too. This might work out cheaper than buying tortoise stuff.
