Help - duck in my garden - should I do anything?

Recommended Posts

I am awaiting the delivery of my eglu and chickens but today a duck appeared in my garden and does not seem to want to leave. Should I do anything?

It looks quite young. Have seen it walking around and stretching its wings so I don't think it is injured. It is quite inquisative as has come up quite close to me for a look.

It is now sitting in the shade at my back door.

think it is wild - it was there first thing at the bottom of the garden so I very much doubt it was dumped.

it has stayed all day and looks like it has no plans to leave. eating and drinking ok. generally looks quite happy.

It is sleeping just outside the back door now. the cat is not happy asi have kept her in all day.

i don't have a pond but have put some water in a paddling pool - shes not interested though and seems happy in the shade near the back door.

should i give her shelter for tonight?

can i let the cat out tomorrow if she is still here?

Could you put it in a cardboard box until the morning? - somewhere like a garage or shed?

If so, put something in the box - an old towel will do if you don't have straw or Aubiose, and leave a bowl of water and perhaps some porridge if you don't already have feed ready for your hens.

Put it back out in the morning and see if it moves on or goes back to where it appeared.......

Perhaps someone is telling you to keep ducks in the new Eglu and not chickens?
