Chook n Boo Mum
Quick update, peace appears to have broken out in our chook run since last weekend when I was slightly neurotic over the pecking, softie egg etc. The pecked one, Snowdrop, seems to have taken it upon herself to be "chief-keeper-in-line-of-Hairy-Creatures-outside-of-run, who are obviously below her in the pecking order!! DH has extended the run, nearly doubled it in fact, by buying a length of weldmesh wire and bending it to match the Eglu's run. This seems to have made a huge difference to the chooks (and my sanity!) He's very fond of his little feathered girls already. ("shall I go and dig them some worms.....? How can we catch some bugs for them?"!!!!) Since Monday, Buttercup has laid a perfect little egg almost every day, so we have all enjoyed our first "home-made" eggs, and the children have collected warm eggs today and yesterday - they were so excited! "this is the best eggy bread I've ever had Mummy" was Toby's response after devouring his!! Thank you to everyone for their support, when it was so needed, no doubt further questions and queries will be beamed out to you all in the fullness of time, but at the moment I am feeling like a (fairly!) confident chook mummy! daisymay
Sounds like you're doing a fantastic job. Sounds like a genius idea with the weldmesh. Well done chook mumy!

Olly
It's great when you can stop worrying and start enjoying! Do post a pic of the weldmesh, would love to see how that has worked!

Chook n Boo Mum
Once I work out how to get the photos from the camera to the computer....then to the Omlet site....! I think I'll have to get DH to post them for me, I am such a techno-numptie!! A friend who got her chooks 2 weeks before me has been asking for pics of my girls - I have them on the camera (one stage further than her at least!) and can now put the memory card into the computer...get scared at that point that I'll wipe them off the card and lose them in the ether! Must get lessons & soon!! As the new weldmesh is slightly thicker/harder & heavier than the original, we've joined the two runs together with copious quantities of cable ties, the man who designed these was a genius!! We tried to use the Omlet catches, but they were too fiddly & a little too small, as the two types of wire were slightly out of alignment, a small price to pay for safe & happy chooks! I'm already "planning" that we can buy another piece of weldmesh, and another Eglu and link them all together & have a very long run along the boundary fence, maybe with doors fitted along the length for the chooks to freerange from, with 3 or 4 "ex -batt sisters" to join our little flock.......DH hasn't said no - yet! Maybe I should settle with what I have for now, and make absolutely certain that my 3 hairy girls are going to settle in with these 3 before I get my next little band! The chooks haven't freeranged properly yet, they sort of dash out & dash back in again, and only when the dogs are indoors. We have a way to go yet in our integration programme I feel!!!
