elliejay
So the ladies arrived on Saturday and have spent this week teaching us that they now rule the roost in our house! When we picked them up, we were told they were around 18 weeks, still a few weeks off laying, so we were thrilled to find an egg this morning when we let them out. Now I am worrying that I need to change their food, as they are on growers mash. Do I need to change over to layers straight away? If so, will this affect the two that are not laying yet? Oh the stress of being a parent! (Hi everyone, by the way!)
Laura & CTB
Congratulations on the egg I picked my two new girls up last Friday one is 18 weeks and the other 16 weeks old - they were already being fed on layers mash.
Egluntyne
My new babies are on layers pellets....they are 19 weeks and I've had them a week. I'd swap them, as they need the extra calcium once they start laying. Congrats on the egg.
chickenanne
Check what's in the growers pellets... they often contain coccidios.. thingumy (can't spell it, sorry), some types of which you should be very careful about.... read the back of the sack/bag and check if it says the eggs should not be eaten. it won't do you much harm, so don't panic if you've already eaten some eggs, but best avoided. Aside from that I'd swap gradually from growers to layers - mix the two together with progressively less growers each day. I think the prefer a slower change of diet, is gentler on the digestion (again, though, not a disaster if you don't do it gradually).
