Guest
there's a monthly farmers' market at a garden centre about 2 minutes away from me. There's "Ooops, word censored!"ody doing cakes and biscuits or sweets so I thought I MIGHT have a bash at selling some home made stuff. I thought I'd make some flavoured Madeira cakes (made with either our girls eggs or free range eggs) as my breadmaker makes the most delicious cakes every time and either sell it in slices or whole cakes. I thought I'd also make some chicken shaped cookies (when my chicken cookie cutter turns up!). Also, maybe some petit fours of some description. I've just rung the garden centre to find out what's involved. They said they provide the table and a stall is £15 for the day. I asked if I needed any sort of health and safety certificate etc, he said he'll find out and call me back. I might just do it once, to see how it goes and take it from there. Not sure yet! Any tips gratefully received! p.s. if I do go ahead, I'll be handing out BHWT leaflets too and telling people about our girls.
Guest
I'm looking for simple sweet recipes at the mo, I though I'd do things like this http://www.greenchronicle.com/recipes/almond_crunch.htm and wrap them up fancily in little cellophane bags, that sort of thing. kannie
Phone the local council, Poet, to see if you need to meet any standards: probably part of the environmental health department. I think you might be OK for a one-off, as people do cakes for fetes and things, but you might need a food hygiene certificate or an inspection if you do it more often. You can do a one day training and a very simple test to get your food hygiene cert. But I'd check yourself rather than let someone else check for you: its you that'd get prosecuted if you were in breach of something!

kannie
Do let us know what they say, Poet - I'd be interested, just as a point of curiousity!
Willow
I have a great little muffin book with recipes that are very quick to make up - last cake stall to raise money for brownies I made up 72 that morning (would have been more but I had several other things to do that morning and I don't do early mornings). If you don't sell them all they freeze very well for packed lunches. They are healthy muffins rather than self indulgent muffins, if you want some recipes let me know. Guest
thanks Patricia Just tried the woman from the council but she's off sick I'm going to have a chat with my jam lady t'row and hopefully we'll have time to visit the cash and carry first to price up some of the ingredients; butter, sugar and lemons. I'm not compromising on the eggs, they're coming from a free range farm near me.
