StephanieSB
I've done a search and found a batch of threads recdommending Stalosan (or similar branded product) to put under the bedding on the floor of the run. But -- sorry if this is a stupid question -- is Stalosan safe then for chickens to eat? I ask because, my chooks (and I assume all chickens) will pick and eat stuff off the bedding and will inevitably ingest some of the Stalosan. So it's safe for them to ingest then? And second question -- what about sprinkling Stalosan on grass? At the moment, my girls are in a run that I move about the grass to a new spot each day. I was wondering if a sprinkle of Stalosan on the spot they recently left would help deodorise that old area (I do poo pick and rake, but there is a lingering whiff). The grass is looking fine -- but the scent of we've-just-been-here could do with a bit of fending off.
Egluntyne
I use stalosan and mine have lived to tell the tale. I'm not sure I'd use it on grass....it is rather expensive. How about some garden lime?
StephanieSB
How about some garden lime? Ah, now, I've seen garden lime at the garden centre and wondered about that. They only come (at my garden centre, anyway) in humongous tubs, so I wondered if we would ever use so much. Also, at the pace we move the chickens about the garden, they will get back onto an old spot every 7-10 days. Will the lime be safe for them to go back onto after only a week? Same question as above really -- is it safe if they get some down their gullets?
Egluntyne
Yes...it is only calcium carbonate. Good for shell formation. ...as long as it is GARDEN lime and not BUILDERS.
