As you will all know it is raining, alot. The chickens are coming on Friday and my plan was to put them on the grass for the time being but the grass is so so wet. I am wondering if I should send the husband to B&Q and buy some slabs to put down (I was going to do this eventually anyway). I am just worried about putting them down straight away on a boggy ground. It doesn't seem like there will be much let up in Bristol.

 

Anyway if you think so could you answer these questions...

 

do you put the slabs straight on the grass or do you put sand under?

 

How many slabs would you need for an eglu with standard run

Hi - we're in Bristol and it is HORRID isn't it!

 

Our runs are on slabs - we just put them straight down on the ground, then run on top, then add easibed/aubiose/hemcore.

 

Don't know how many slabs you would need - but you don't need much on the sides of the run.

It is totally awful isn't it When I ordered the chickens the weather was lovely and I thought getting them in the summer would ease me into chookery before the harsh weather of the winter.

 

My huaband recons we should just put the chickens, for now, where the trampoline is as the trampoline has been protecting the ground below from the rain. Then this weekend scour trade it/freecycle for someone giving away paving slabs. I worked out it would be about £35 for the slabs for the run, and that is the cheap ones

My girls arrived during the floods last year and my garden was so much boggier than now but they coped just fine.

If you have time and the money then pop some slabs down but I wouldn't worry about it. Chickens have survived in worse conditions than a bit of mud.

I'm sure you'll be fine and will give them everything they need.
