What breed of chicken/bantam?

Recommended Posts

Having finally ordering my eglu I now have to make the decision on what chickens/bantams to get?

I will be getting 3 chickens and was hoping for different coloured eggs, however the cream legbars I was hoping for have already been sold.

I would like them to be different varieties and need to get them from a breeder in Lancashire.

So what breeds would you recommend and would you choose chickens or bantams?

Thanks

Debbie

Depends if you want them primarily for pets or for eggs or both. Bantams lay less often and much smaller eggs (which are great for baking due to high yolk to white ratio). Pekin bantams are gorgeous, robust and friendly and would fit well with an eglu, but you won't get so many eggs as with "full size" chickens.

Another thing to consider is that hybrid chickens will lay pretty much all year round, whereas a pure breed will probably stop over the winter months.

Personally,I would go for big hens rather than Bantams as the eggs are a much more useful size (I have both)

You could have a trio that lay different colours, like a Whitestar for white eggs, a Maran for dark brown & another hybrid for light brown.
