Guilt & Bumper bit

Recommended Posts

Feeling really guilty at the moment...had to resort to a bumper bit for Babs....she has started pecking Ginger again & this time it's more brutal. She has been spotted grabbing poor ole Ginge by the tail feathers & pulling her back. Tried anti-pek spray but that didn't deter her one bit. Got some bumper bits from the Wernlas collection today & managed to get it on on the 2nd attempt. She's none too pleased but it's for Ginger's benefit. Was out at their run earlier & Babs pecked so hard at Ginger, poor old Ginger literally screamed, she 's never made that noise before when Babs has had a go at her. Babs is rubbing her beak on the chippings in the run & is trying to scratch it off. Just need some reassurance from some far more experienced chicken oweners than myself that she can still eat & drink with it on.....she did manage to eat the mealworms that I gave them...it feels really cruel putting it on her, but I can't watch her savage Ginger anymore...

I've had to resort to bumper bits in the past and currently have one on one of my girls. They can eat, drink and preen perfectly well-honestly :D

Hth It really is for the best-I had a horrible incident with a naughty hen causing a lot of damage to Rose trying to feather pull. Rose ended up with a gaping hole in her and blood everywhere. :( Bumper bits are life savers sometimes :D

I know how you feel. One of mine is attacking my broody whenever I put her out in the run to eat. I tried the other night to put the bumper bar on but my husband insisted it was cruel - clipping it on the end of my finger saying 'how would you like that on you?'

I gave in but seeing her last night has me determined that when I get home from work today it's going on.
