TheChookKeeper
Having visited the local breeder to pick up 2 new chickens earlier in the week, my sister and I fell in love with the young ducks they had too... So, sure enough, after several late nights researching all I could find (not much out there I have to say - althought his forum has helped!), we today picked up two beautiful little silver appleyards. They were smaller than I remembered them, and at this very moment, are making my 4 original chooks VERY upset... they have now been squarking non-stop for 2 hours. I can imagine my neighbours love me. Hoping tomorrow will be better! On the plus side - the arrival of these new "terrifying" imposters has made the 4 original gingernut rangers leave the 2 new black rocks alone... poor things have actually been allowed to walk all the way from one end of their run to the other today! And now, a few pictures! First, one of the original 4 gingernuts, who has been squarking for 2 hours solid. They don't seem to be trying to intimidate the ducks... they actually seem quite scared of the pint-sized intruders. Then, the 2 new black rocks - who are LOVING the new arrivals, as it gives them some peace. They aren't in the least bit bothered by the ducks AT ALL. And last, but most certainly not least, my two beautiful ducks - Geraldine behind, and Alice up front (yep, you guessed it - from the Vicar of Dibley - due to Geraldine's "dog collar"!!!) They are in seperate runs at the moment, until the ducks are a bit bigger, but I'll hopefully be able to have them living together in the future (once they have got used to eachother!) The ducks, by the way, are not bothered by the chickens greatly either. It is just the gingernuts that have gone a bit bonkers!

TheChookKeeper
They seem to be drinking furiously - not sure if they are actually drinking, or just splashing their bills about in the water. This morning, Alice (the larger of the two) discovered she falls into the water if she reaches too far into it... she had an absolute panic for a few seconds, and quickly hopped back out... only about 3 minutes later, she was back in, and absolutely LOVING it.... I reckon this may be the first time they have had proper water, rather than just water to drink from a drinker. She was splashing about, and preening herself! Geraldine did manage to get in in the end, but she doesn't seem to interested - I think she may be a bit small yet. They do LOVE to take treats off the water though - something as simple as a bit of grass pulled from the (overgrown) lawn, tossed onto their water, and they behave like they've never been fed! I love them!
