I'm not sure whether I should just be topping up the layer pellets or changing them completely every day? Seems a waste to do that. How often should you change them completely?

I top them up as necessary....as you say, it is a waste to throw them out.

 

The only exception to that is if they were to get went, and they would go off.

I empty my grub once a week and make a bowl of porridge with what's in it. Gives me a chance to wash the grub, and refill with fresh pellets.

 

Recipe for pellet porridge (just in case you haven't come across it before) - pellets and water, mix until soft. I add bokashi bran and crushed eggshells, sometimes a sprinkle of linseed or porridge oats. Chickens love it!!

That's what I do too. I find the limestone flour ends up in the bottom of the grub, so I also add that to the porridge. I use a similar recipe with the odd extra thrown in now and again. Raisins etc. They soon eat it up.
