Ok, I did what you suggested, Claret, and you're quite right. The size 5 does fit better so I've bought some - they were in the sale for £14.99. However, they're not at all loose enough to wear with socks, I don't think - can't decide whether to keep them for winter wear with socks, or to sell them on ebay and hopefully recoup the £14.99! My new ones are red 8)
