How long could we leave chickens for?

Recommended Posts

Looking to go away for possibly 3 nights and don't have anyone to look after chickens.

I know some people have left theirs but can't remember how long it is safe to do so.

Now we have a Cube we have a superglug between 3 chickens, so don't think water would be an issue, but would a full Grub be sufficient?

Hiya

We have 6 hens and we left them for 3 nights recently. Ours do go back into their coop as it gets dark every night and their pen is completely fox/cat/child proof. We have the traditional feeders and drinkers which provide enough water and food for a few days but because of the hot weather we asked a neighbour to keep an eye on the water etc and to throw some corn in every afternoon.

I would definately recommend asking a friend / neighbour to keep an eye on things even if you don't think they need to.

Hope that helps, H

Technically, the Superglug should hold enough, and you can always add an extra food container, pet bowl or something. On that basis 3 nights should be ok.

I've never left mine more than two nights, however - if something did happen, and chickens aren't the sturdiest of creatures, it would be awful if the other two chickens were there for a couple of days ... if you get my drift.

Worth trying to find someone just to pop their head into the garden and check that all is ok - no need to top up food and water, if that's not necessary.

Might be a good idea.

I've not got a superglug as I have an eglu. But I bought a spare grub and glug set last year to make life easier for my chicken sitter. The 2 grubs were filled to the brim with pellets and it took them nearly 4 days for my 4 girls to eat them all.
