JulesL
Hi! My two pepperpots and one gingernut arrived on 25/07/08. One pepperpot and the gingernut have a very small, pale pink combs but the other pepperpot has a much bigger red comb. The gingernut crouches down when I go to pick her up whereas the pepperpots run off. When do you think they will start laying? I'm not really sure what signs to look for... Egluntyne
Crouching is a good sign and they usually start laying within a week to ten days, but they usually also have started to develop a red face and larger comb and wattles.
alison
I think my speckeldy will take forever as she doesn't seem to have a comb or wattles to speak of! It was my head chicken, a who laid today, or it might just possibly have been one of the as one is also crouching, but was crouching 5 days ago
JulesL
Still no eggs but then I have only had them for 2 weeks. Raquel has started crouching but her comb and wattles don't seem to have grown since I've had her. Need eggs - reluctant to buy any now I have chooks in the garden! JulesL
Resorted to buying some eggs from Waitrose this morning - craving a poached egg! Come on girls!
mrsallen08
I feel your pain Jules! We've had chooks since June although they were very young then. They are no 23 weeks old and no sign of eggs but very red faces etc. I gave up buying eggs at 20 weeks thinking it would be 'any day...' And not a bloomin softie! I will be putting an egg timer in soon and a roasting pan as an alternative! Come on!!!! (Sorry for frustration but Im dying for boiled egg and soldiers!) Bluebelle
Crouching is definitely a good sign-the only one of mine to lay so far started crouching a few days ago!
Steve.
Geraldine who has no comb or wattles to speak of popped an Egg today! She is the smallest of the chickens ... and boy did she tell everyone that: (a) An Egg is on the Way (b) No really an Egg is coming © Get out of the coop an Egg is coming (d) Egg is here! (e) Egg is here! (f) Egg is here! EDIT: It was 50 grams and white.
Ms Marple
Mine arrived on July 14th, so have been with us 4 weeks tomorrow. According to the farm, the ginger nut was 19 weeks, the other two were 15 weeks. This means that one is now 23 weeks (Mistress Mabel) and Henrietta and George Harrison are 19 weeks. Surely Mistress Mabel should be laying very soon?? All three have red faces, Mabel has a medium red comb, George has a small pink comb and Herietta has a black? comb. No one obviously squatting when I approach - too busy checking me out for treats! Bought yet more eggs today
Steve.
I've quickly come to the conclusion that Chickens are like Children. They all develop at their own pace.
