legal right to keep chickens?

Recommended Posts

I've searched on this an so far everything that I've found always talks about specific restrictions such as covenants on properties.

ISTR that unless specifcally banned then there is a specific egal right to keep chickens on your own property. Is this true or am I completely misremembering? or is just that if noone said no then by default there is a right?

If you own the property, and there are no restrictive covenants prohibiting the keeping of poultry, then there is nothing to stop you. (I wouldn't advise that you keep a rooster however, as your neighbours would be likely to object.)

If you are a tennant, then you need to seek the permission of your landlord.

I looked at my deeds. They were fine they didn't mention anything about keeping livestock. They did say that we are not allowed to have caravans parked on our property, but there are about six caravans in our road!

I also phoned the council who said that as long as the chooks are not a 'nuisance' to the neighbours it would be fine. I guess they mean if they are noisy but they are no noisier than their little girl!!

I contacted my council too to just double check and also looked at the deeds to my house. I'd read somewhere that some modern properties can have a covenant regarding not keeping livestock. It took the council a couple of weeks to "look at the history of the site" but after explaining that we were not having a fixed house but having one that you could move around the garden plus not having a cockrel they were more than happy. I also checked with my immediate neighbours too to ensure they would be happy to look after them whenever we go away to which they were more than enthusiastic!
