Box Clever

Recommended Posts

We have a rented telly, a big bulky crt widescreen one. We have had it about nine years or so. Anyway as the price of tv's has dropped to a level where I cannot justify the rental so we went out and bought a new one yesterday.

I just phoned Box Clever to give notice and ask them to come and collect the old one.

The operative then asked 'Why do you want to return it?'

Fair question I thought so replied 'I have bought one'

'Didn't you think of upgrading to a new one with us?'

'Yes'

'Then why didn't you?'

'Didn't want to'

'Why'

'My choice, the decision has been made, when will you come to pick up the TV?'

'Could you not keep it for another room?, we can do it for £15/month'

'No, it's too big'

I was then told 'You have to give us a months notice'

I replied 'that is what I am doing'

'But the months notice is from your payment date, ie the Ist, so we can't start your notice period until Sept 1st and can't collect it till Oct 2nd'

'Why?'

'Because it is past the 1st of the month!'

'So what?'

'It's in the contract'

'Ok, is there any way you can pick it up early, I am prepared to pay the two months rent?'

'If there is a cancellation they will call you'

I don't think they want me to leave them. or ever go back to them

This has annoyed me just a tad.

I can't believe the attitude of this company.

Oh, well if they want me to hang on to it for two months then it will have to go in the garage. I hope it is waterproof because the garage isn't. If they do not pick it up when they say I will be charging them storage fees.

If only I'd known that all the other rooms in my house have cheaper rents I would have moved it years ago

I can't say I am suprised though.

Did they,by any chance, used to be called Radio Rentals?

If so, I had a very similar experience with them.

They didn't want me to leave & went out of their way to make it awkward for me to leave. They kept me hanging on for 2 months.

In the end I told them the TV would be under my carport,I was cancelling the direct debit & if the TV got damaged or pinched it was their problem.

They turned up to collect it within 4 days 8)

I would never, ever rent from them again.

have you checked your contract? They could be pulling a fast one.

I have no idea where it is. I took the deal out with Radio Rentals who then merged with Granada who then became Box Clever and that was years ago.

They probably are pulling a fast one. They seem to work on the principle that if they make it hard to contact them and leave then people won't bother.

That is why they have closed down most of their high street branches.

The chances of the TV needing repairing over the next few weeks have dramatically increased.

Friends of mine had a similar issue - basically 2nd hand TVs are worthless to them, so they make it hard to give your notice. My friends were renting a video recorder, and the rental place - after a lot of messing around about upgrades etc - told them to keep it!

I suppose if they can't re-rent the set, they have dispose of it, which they now have to pay to do in a particular way because of new legislation. In other words, it sounds like they can't be bothered and would rather you had the hassle!!

Surprisingly, I always had a good experience with Radio Rentals. But admittedly that was many moons ago.

Obviously as companies merge, they become less efficient.

Like Poet said, I would double check your contract and put your "notice" in writing, even if only by e-mail.

Years ago (about 30). Dad decided renting was a mugs game, they had been messing him around and trying to put up the rentals etc. So he cancelled and they gave him the run around over collections so he said to them, "look it's Wednsday now, I go on holiday Saturday morning - collect it by then or I'll leave it out on the doorstep for you". Was gone the next day!

He told that story for years and years.
