SAB
Hi - hoping to get a couple of turkey poults very soon but want to ensure I have housing that will fit them when they are full grown as they are for pets, not for eating - ideas anyone? bigmommasally
Don't suppose this will help much, but I went to Jimmy's farm in Suffolk at the weekend and he had 4 turkeys in with his Pygmy Goats, they had a small shed/stall to shelter in. Have to say I never thought I'd like turkeys but these 4 were really sweet (they are Kelly bronze), they were really friendly and were going up to everyone at the fence looking for treats. If I ever move and get a bigger garden I'd definately be getting a couple. Good Luck with yours.
Egluntyne
You might be better asking on the Practical Poulty forum, or wait till Lesley logs on again.
buffie
Yes we simply aren't experienced with Turkeys to offer this advice and I can only suggest you do plenty of research As Egluntine suggested practical poultry is a good place to start Buffie x
SLK69
Hi - hoping to get a couple of turkey poults very soon but want to ensure I have housing that will fit them when they are full grown as they are for pets, not for eating - ideas anyone? Hi It's funny what hens do to you - A few years ago I would have thought keeping hens an impossibility - now I'm wondering what you need to keep a peacock and peahen. It's like when you have stretched your mind to keeping hens you think what else can I do that I once thought impossible? Knowing you, you will be researching like mad - will they like the bantams? Good luck with the turkeys susie x
SAB
Thanks everyone - I have been researching everywhere I can and have been in touch with Practical Poultry forum. The poults will only be a few weeks old when I get them, so not too large and can live in old wendy house (!) until such times as they get too large and then we can look at what size of shed would be best. I am hopefully getting them in a couple of weeks and they have been raised with variety of chickens, including bantams around them - this and the fact they are young enough means they should be fine with mine - in fact, at first we will have to keep them safe from the chickens! We will also have to worm chickens and turkeys regularly to avoid sudden turkey death from blackfoot which they can catch from chickens, but is not deadly to chickens. It is mad how addictive poultry is! For years my OH has been saying "NO" to any chickens, then agreed to 4 - here we are only a few months later with 12 chooks (one of whom has turned out to be a cockeral !) and my OH is getting me the turkeys in advance of my 40th next year (not to be eaten at my 40th I hasten to add - just as pets). He has even taken a week off work to help me with making a big safe area in the garden for them all.
