Ain't Nobody Here
Someone I know came round today to look at my setup. She's very keen to get chickens but has to work on her OH first. She says however, that her back garden has no grass at all. It's all flowerbeds, and crazy paving. I think this has been asked before, but am I right in thinking this is OK as long as she supplements their diet with green veg?
toastedblue
they'd be fine on paving as long as she outs some sort of bedding down in the run, like aubios, easibed etc, not sure about her flower beds though... hope she's prepared to watch the chucks devour the lot
Egluntyne
Mine are all on paving topped with Aubiose, and there is very little grass, if any, in their ranging area. They do get green veg regularly though, and it hasn't stopped their egg laying activities.......I'll just give Dixie Chick a little mention here. Gallina
Hens don't need greens, they just like them. Battery hens lay like troopers, and they don't get anything but pellets. But the crazy paving and flowerbeds suggest to me a fussy garden: your friend may need to be made fully aware of the impact that hens can have. She presumably has a space in mind for the run? Ain't Nobody Here
I'll just give Dixie Chick a little mention here. Why? What's she done? Thanks all . I agree, it sounds fussy. I've never seen it but she's not a fussy person at all - very down to earth - so I imagine it's OK (and she says she's not into gardening particularly either). She's thinking about moving some of the paving and putting it onto a flowerbed - hopefully she'll ask for some advice and I can go round for a nosey .... I mean, offer my expertise . bronze
My run is on paving with hemcore in it. They get greens but to be honest don't seem to eat them. In fact the only treat they like that I give them is mealworms.
