I am having a problem at the moment with one of my girls laying soft eggs. They have organic layers pellets, grit, poultry spice, garlic powder and limestone flour daily. They also get lots of treats after 4.30pm (s"Ooops, word censored!"s, green cabbage etc every day).

 

The other hens are laying lovely eggs - although some sometimes have a sandy sort of coating, but not often.

 

The one last night was like a balloon. It was almost round in shape with a very thick string that was cream in colour and very thik (looked like the almost translucent one that is normally in an egg but some of it was outside the shell). There was also a yolk (no shell) on the egg when I got it out of the nest box, but the soft egg also contained a yolk.

 

My lawford blue is not yet laying as far as I know but I suspect she is the one laying these, I could be wrong though as one of my crested has been known to lay 2 eggs a day.

 

Any ideas or advice? I am going to cut out the treats for today to see if that helps.

Cutting back on treats may help. I couldn't find any limeflour when i was looking so got some Davinova C which is a liquid calcium supplement that you can add to the water, maybe this might help.

I would cut out treats , provide them with mixed poultry grit and maybe a bit of limestone flour.

 

They do sometimes have a few blips when they first start laying.

Shell Max... think I should get advertising royalties for the times I say it. Long as they don't free drink when out too much it's brilliant !!!
