sheik Posted September 3, 2008 Share Posted September 3, 2008 Well since we had to rehome our lavender silkie, we've been wanting a companion for our white silkie. She is OK, but our two hybrids are much faster than she is, and just don't have the more laid back personality of a silkie. We've been waiting for months for Thorne's to get us a golden silkie, but they've had a bad year for hatching (loads of cockerels) and we can't take the risk of not getting a girl. So, Thorne's have suggested a Sablepoot bantam instead. Does anyone know anything about this breed? We need to decide quickly, as we have to reserve one and Tony from Aviaries4U is going to come and fit his latest product - an "integration / isolation" run that will fit inside our existing walk-in run for the new bird. Guest Posted September 3, 2008 Share Posted September 3, 2008 I know someone who breeds them, he has several cockerals in the same run along with some girls- I asked him if (having several males together) they fought but he said they're very docile. Does millefleur just mean it has oversized feathers on its feet? In which case, yes, as they told me this means the chicken is slower so Pootle won't be left behind quite so much. Yes, this next chicken is on Thorne's after they sold us River - we've been waiting months for a gold silkie. In fact at one point we had one in a box on their counter until Carl and Frank conferred and decided it was a cockerel. Those silkies are so hard to sex that Frank has pretty much given up - he reckons he's going to get training from an expert he knows, as he's been wrong too many times this year. A sablepoot on the other hand, is apparently very easy to sex! By the way, how is your columbine / skyline? Luna has grown up to be a very noisy chicken and squawks much too loudly for comfort when she wants to be let out to free range . superjules Posted September 4, 2008 Share Posted September 4, 2008 Millefleur is a colour, it's kind of peachy, mottled with black and white. Our columbines are nutcases, I do think there's something a bit missing in the head about them. They're easily spooked and set the others off regularly, running round squawking with frilly neck feathers! OH keeps threatening them with "rehoming" although he hasn't mentioned it since the weather's been pants and he's not been in the garden. Good luck with your new chook, hope she settles in well. sheik Posted September 5, 2008 Author Share Posted September 5, 2008 Luna is the same as Yoda and Yaddle then! She hates birds and is easily terrified if a pigeon or something flies overhead.
