alison
I have rehomed some chickens from a lovely lady with a super chicken set up, sad that she can't keep them any longer. I will drop some eggs off when I go past. The hens have settled in well. I took all four and wanted them all and was more than happy to keep all four, but a close friend who got hens at the same time only has two, even though she wanted four. She persuaded her DH and then me to part with two. She has taken on the two 's as they are a natural pair and I have the two Sussex, which I am thrilled with. My friends GNR's settled well and rewarded her with a huge egg on Saturday morning. Mine were separated on friday afternoon by a wire pen I made inside my run as Sybil kept going for them, funny really as she was the one the others picked on the day she came, but when I think about it, it makes sense as she was the bottom of the flock, and now two have two newcomers, so she is putting them straight, though the newbies are older, I think she is going to tell them to get in line! In the evening when I went to check them all, mine original family were all in the cube, but one of the newbies had managed to escape the temporary pen, and was roosting on the top of the pen, the other still inside as she had laid an egg! I shooed them into the cube and they settled. Saturday morning they had all let themselves out and there seems to be harmony, apart from a queue for the nesting box! The new girls laid me the most extraordinary large eggs, funny shape, but I put this down to moving them and the journey. They have really squitty, smelly poos, but giving them lots of bran and garlic and wormed them in case. At the risk of speaking too soon, it is a lot easier than I anticipated. I thought I was in for days and weeks of integration! They are fine together, occasionally they will have a pop at each other, only because the nesting box is full and Rose likes it to herself when laying! They all look fantastic together. So thank you to the lady who couldn't keep them anymore, I am very happy with them. Fingers crossed!
