Patridge bantam chicken poorly foot?

I have three 'barrel ponds' in my garden. One is mature with some nice tall bullrush in it and something with yellow flowers, and the other two have only pond weed in them. I'd like to get a lily going in one. Does anyone know the best time to buy water plants and put them in ponds? Is spring best or can you do it in autumn?

 

I blame omlet. On the homepage, the image which changes - there's a lovely little galvanised steel pond containing a waterlily and some rushes with a chicken perched on the edge. How could you not want something similar?!

Spring would probably be better - you would need a miniature lily so choose a good water garden centre where they will be able to advise you.
