We've noticed lots of Pootle's feathers around the garden, and can see them blowing off her too. As far as I know, she's too young to be moulting properly, as she's only about eight months old.

 

Do silkies lose a few feathers before growing a thicker coat for the winter?

 

She's not getting pecked, and seems perfectly healthy. There are no noticeable bald patches on her, so you wouldn't know she is losing feathers to look at her.

My Priscilla is just going through a mini-moult at the moment and she is 9 months old. She has kept her top feathers but lost her underwear. I don't know if it's the same with silkies though as they have a differnet type of feathers. I'm sure someone will be along in a moment to clarify.

my white silki is same she gives herself a shake and wow a cloud of feathers appear, im giving her cod liver oil etc as it suppose to be good for them esp in a moult.

We too have a lot of white silkie feathers around at present, he looks well otherwise, so I am guessing a mini moult (he is only a few months old). Silkie's feathers are so... well, sily and feathery (!) that they really get everywhere don't they!

It is that time of year I think My girls are shedding feathers right left and centre.

Thanks for the reassurance, it's her small, downy feathers that she's losing, not her main ones.

I hadn't heard of a mini-moult before!
