Frozen!

Recommended Posts

Good job I had a brainwave last night when the snow started falling - as well as covering the Eglu with an old rug and towel, I remembered to bring their water feeder into the house. Ours is one of the old fashioned galvanised waterers and I have enough trouble getting the top off to fill it up on warm days so I think it would have been really difficult today. The water was room temperature for the girls - much nicer :D

Also, by accident, we had left a couple of patio chairs on the lawn and these had patches of grass underneath without any snow on. The girls have done nothing this morning but peck at these little areas of grass. Perhaps when it's going to freeze or snow, we should try and keep a little area clear for our girls to eat when the rest is all frosty  .

Hi Nicola,

Yes! The blanket trick really DOES work!!!

I used an old rug and a large old bath sheet towel. I put the rug over the Eglu so that it covered the eggport and the handle to open the pop hole then draped the towel so that it hung over the doorway to keep draughts out and make sure it didn't freeze shut. If you check out the photo in the gallery in the "Kate's Girls" album you'll see how it looked.

I think I'll just hang the towel and rug over the washing line so that the worst of the water drips off then leave them both in the garage to dry. I can't be bothered to wash either of them because there's a good chance they'll be needed again before too long.

I'm going to use them everytime the forecast is for frost/snow just to make sure the Eglu is easy to open.

The girls are well vaselined this morning and have mash stuck to their combs  !

Well funny that you should revive this...

This last snow we had feb 2009 as I live in quite open ground not only does the wind cut into your bones, but any snow drifts to huge amounts, so what I did was this..

I got an old single duvet, put it lengthways into a black bin bag then slotted another bin bag the opposit end..stappled the two "ends" together and then popped that over the eglu like a tea cosy wrap as it were.

And my goodness it worked a treat!

For make do and mend ideas this is great.

As the duvet was a single it was possible to stick it in my washing machine, after the snow had gone, its all clean and ready for use the next time..

Ive put it away with 2 bin bags incase of quick emergency use..LOL..well you never know it may snow at easter like last time some years back...

I have another question...but... have to go find the correct forum or I`l be back...

I live on the side of a valley in south west France, we are at around 1800 ft and the weather is, I think you would call 'bracing' in the winter. Anyway the girls were transferred to their winter area in December which is a sheltered part of my garden near the house. What I did was cover their Egloo with a large ground sheet folded to cover the whole of the Egloo and part of the run, and under it I put a large sheet of bubble wrap. I too take in their water dish each night after it freezing solid. I also put plenty of straw down into their run so they've got something a little warmer to walk on, before heading out into the garden area. It got down to -16 for one night and they came through unscathed, but am seriously thinking of bobble hats and little scarfs for next winter.

Come on Omlet, how about an Egloo Cozey for us that live in slightly more 'challenging' areas? Can I have a pink one please, the girls would like that.

As I write this the temperature is heading towards 30 degrees, girls quite happy in their shaded run although they do venture out for a dust bath late afternoon.
