Lewis Posted November 4, 2008 Share Posted November 4, 2008 They are pretty much the same as keeping other chickens, though they may need a bit more protection from all the cold weather, being so small. The silkies feet will need to be kept relatively clean aswell to stop them getting muddy/mites or having scaly leg mites. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Daphne Posted November 6, 2008 Share Posted November 6, 2008 you also have to watch the polish crests - they can be prone to lice/mites - tho we've not had any in over a year. Just check them regularly. More importantly, you need to provide a lipped drinker (like a water tower) so they don't get wet crests which expose the tops of their heads which can lead to a) pecking and b) they're more likely to catch cold. The other thing is that they can't see properly, particularly upwards, because of the crest; so be careful of running them in a mixed flock. They can be bullied.
