Emma&lewie
Hi sorry if I sound a bit daft but I have just picked up Pepper my black star and underneath her crop she is tolay bald. patch about size of an orange, .. looks like im getting her ready to roast! I havent noticed any stray feathers, she is eating laying and looking well, and havent noticed any feather picking could this just be moulting? Im quite new to all this, only got girls in july so havent experienced a moult yet
Mel (& Paul)
It does sound a bit like a moult. You may not always notice a feather plucker amongst your girls as they will eat the feathers - but in my experience the feather pluckers tend to go for the feathers on the back / wings / tail, rather than the crop. If she starts getting balder and balder it may be that she is going broody - she will take her feathers out so her heat gets to the egg. Look out for lice and mites - have a look at the great topics in this section which show you exactly what to look out for and how to treat them. Good Luck!
