tom123
What is it and does anyone use it??? Thanks Tom
bluekarin
Its used instead of straw for bedding and is meant to be much better than straw. I also use it in the run. It breaks down really well in the compost bin, and it doesn't have the same amount of dust as straw. Also, I find it very easy to clean up the poop in the girls house. It is a bit pricier than straw, but I think it's worth it. Then again, I am only a newbie chicken mum!
tom123
Thanks but I am a bit worried about it getting wet quick and me then having to chuck it away every week? I have a covered run but it is quite high so rain can still get in from sides slightly! Thanks Tom
Bephlam
I use hemcore, but not instead of straw (I use shredded paper, usually junk mail and old bills, in their nest box instead of straw!). I use it instead of woodshavings, on the floor of their house...inside only. It's wonderful stuff...around £7 a bag, but that lasts me roughly 3 months. I love it, and personally wouldn't use anything else (although I don't use it outside, I use woodchips outside). It's infused with citronella, which as well as smelling gorgeous...it acts as an insect repellent, and an antifungal agent. Both wonderful for chook keeping!! On the outside of the run I use woodchip, and change that every three months - by which time it's mulched down nicely and can be used for the garden!! I poo pick daily of course!!!
