Saving for a cube and eglu - few questions about them

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Am saving for a (cube lilac) cube and (eglu lilac) eglu (yay!) but I want to factor in for everything I'll need.

So for a cube with 10 chickens in it, with 2 (or 3) extension panels, how many feeders/drinkers would you get. If it helps, I'm planning to have 5-6 silkies (bantam), and 4-5 light sussex or similar.

Do eglus make good homes for broody hens/with babies? What about for raising motherless chicks? I'm hoping to use the eglu with an extension and extra run bit for raising babies, with the cube for keeping my girls/growers in. How many silkies (bantam) could live in an eglu? What about light sussex?

And, for my really stupid question of the day, can ducks use a cube? (I am looking into ducks for my BC to herd, and I'm wondering if they could use a cube?)

Thanks,

Carla

I don't think ducks would us a Cube - they wouldn't manage the ladder. We have ducks in a raised duck house but it is only about 10" from the ground and has a solid, wooden, ramp for them to use. We had ducks in an Eglu - remove the roosting bars - and they were fine, but are happier with a larger area than the run, so we had the Eglu in a larger run.

The amount of hens you can keep in an Eglu or Cube depends on whether you use the attached runs. If you have them in a large run area you can keep more than if you use the attached runs.
