eggscombobulated
Can anyone advise my husband on laying paving slabs........does the run lay on top of the them or can the slabs be placed inside? We have a cube with 3 extensions...which is best? The run and cube are going to stay insitu. Are paving slabs the best option because of hygiene ie every 5 or 6 weeks the Auboise can be changed and the slabs Poulty Shielded especially in this damp weather? From what I have read infections/diseases can fester in the soil? And which is best - wood chippings or auboise/hemcore? Your help is appreciated......considering my husband wasn't keen on having the chickens they are winning him over - Horray!
tom123
Well I have my run ON the paving slabs but I guess it is really up to preference just as long as you don't have a big gap in between the run and slabs. I have tried both wood chips and hemcore and have found hemcore the easiest and best to work with and you only need to change it say 5-6 weeks which is a bonus. Ooh and the smell is amazing! Steve.
I considered slabs but read of other folks that had continued damp problems as the slabs weren't cemented/mortared. We are in a clay area so 30 seconds of rain = a boggy smelly run knee high in water. I'm getting a concrete base with DPC put in during December. Egluntyne
I have mine on the paving slabs. It is ever so easy to jetwash them clean. We are in a very heavy clay soil area, but haven't had the problems described by Steve.
