speckled hen
Hi everyone I have had the girls for nearly 3 months, I feed them organic layers with organic corn in the afternoons. They also get corn on the cob, veg peelings etc. I notice that lots of people give chooks supplements etc. Do my girls need these? Also when do I need to worm them? If so what with? I dont want my lovely girls to miss out on essentials or lovely goodies just because mummy is a bit daft and doesnt know what to buy!!! Thanks guys x
Ain't Nobody Here
They don't really NEED any supplements - I reckon it's personal preference . I give mine Poultry Spice and garlic powder in their pellets. They get a squirt of apple cider vinegar in their water once a week or so. I'm giving them limestone flour at the moment because Maisie keeps laying softies. Oh, and I worm them with Flubenvet every 3 months. Otherwise, I'm a bit mean . They get corn in the afternoon and the occasional apple/pear core or corn on the cob but I've given up making "tea" for them . I do use mealworms regularly though, to get them back in their run! Hen Watch
Exactly the same as ANH except I give Poultry Spice infrequently - maybe once a week in treats. Ditto - Flubenvet wormer every 3 months. I don't think they need suppliments, but I built my stock of stuff up gradually usually after seeing posts on here and thinking "that's a good idea". Not sure my girls are any better off than without? Not really a suppliment but worth mentioning I do also keep a pot of mixed poultry grit permanently in the run - they eat much more of it in winter when they don't get so much free ranging time. speckled hen
Thanks very much for the replies, I will gradually get a few extras for my girls. I think the grit is a must as they won't be free ranging much over the winter months (dh loves his lawn!!!). i am trying to come up with some ideas for a dust bath and perch etc for the new run. They spend lots of time just snuggled up in their lovely new cube!!
SnowWhite
I use poultry spice on treats at the weekend and garlic powder on pellets during the week. My girls were getting a bit sneezy so I upped the garlic powder and added some echinacea tincture and apple cider vinegar to their water and this has stopped the sneezes. Maybe I worry to much, but the girls are definitely healthier for it!
