what job do you do and which bits do you particularly like and why? are you happy to stay in your current role, if so, what maes you shine above your peers and why are you happy to stay where you are? if you're not happy, why and what can the company and you do to change that?

is there another role you want to work towards? if so, what help and support (i.e training course) do you need to get there?

I get to see loads of these and I'm sorry to say those that just whinge about lack of this or want more of that don't get much attention  (and my staff were very good at those!)

What I suggested to them instead (and a small minority actually tried :D ) was - tell me what in your job you do well, and give me an example or two, tell me anything you need extra help with and what help you want, tell me any skills you have that you would like to use in the workplace that we don't use currently and how they could be helpful.

One of my more junior admin staff, who usually just whinges turned into a real star and told me how she'd sorted out some IT issues, wanted a bit of help understanding our procedure rules and had excellent organisation skills she thought could help at election time. I hadn't known about the IT issues, I sorted out some mentoring on the rules and she proved a real asset on postal votes - even enjoyed herself in the process.

As Poet says, if there's a post you want to work towards, you an use this process to get there - eg instead of being on a project team, you could ask to lead a project team so that you then have a clear example of leadership to talk about later.

May be worth trying a bit of creativity. If nothing else, it'll give your manager something more interesting than usual to read :D

have to agree with the above....we have a system whereby the staff nominate people to write a brief reference for them....they have to supply 4-5 people..

some are obviously their greatest fans...and to be honest not much can be used, but some people think about the subject and their colleague or customer or peer...however they've come into contact with them, and give some good positive points...these are the ones you hope for...

best of luck...it is an awful task...but use it to your advantage...

:-D

Thanks for all your advice :clap::clap:

I took lots of ideas on board esp. about my acheivements for the year, what projects i'd like to be involved next year, etc.

it went really well - so well in fact i now have 2 staff reporting in to me and next year i'll have to do their appraisals _ oh no!! :D
