Hi

 

Please tell me that it is ok to give hens weetabix....I have never 'cooked' for them before.

 

This morning it was so cold and frosty that I felt sorry enough for them to give them weetabix mixed with warm water plus raisins & meal worms. They loved it so that I am going to do the same again tomorrow.

 

Is it ok?

Mine get 2 weetabix, layers mash, raisins, chopped uncooked spring green, bokashi bran and chopped tomatoes all mixed with hot water each morning, it looks and smells revolting but they love it

I just put some warm water in a bowl with some layers pellets for them first thing in the morning. They love it and I know they are still getting their goodness from the pellets.

Weetabix is Phoebes absolute favourite!! Plain, mixed with raisins and cod liver oil, and its a sure way to get Flubenvet into her She doesn't have it too often, as Phoebe has a delicate "tummy" and too much gives her the runs But I'm sure thats only her, Daphne is fine with it.

I would just be wary about salt content of things like that: I don't know how much is in weatabix as its not something I eat, but I know SOME breakfast cereals can have added salt.

Chickens really sholdn't have much salt at all.

My girls have been having warm pellet porridge with a bit of added weetabix since OH read this thread And she always tries to make out its me thats more of a chicken fanatic than her

I think there's no additives and should be fine, but if in doubt leave it out.

 

I give mine porridge made with water, it helps give energy especially if they're moulting.

 

Or Marmite on toast

Mine get porridge, bran and pellets mixed with water, plus poultry spice occasionally and yoghurt from time to time. Sometimes they gobble up the whole lot, sometimes they hardly touch it, and I can't work out why.

Just lately they've taken to doing their smelly poo on the dish. Seems to take forever to get rid of the smell!

This morning mine got, carrot and potato peelings, mixed with cabbage leaves, swede, and a couple of potatoes chucked in along with the remainder of the kids mashed potato from last night. All boiled up and made into a 'lovely' mash They have all scoffed it down, and loved it!!
