peanut12
How do I know if I have a hinny? I have been told that they stop laying and develop spurs on the backs of their legs, and that eventually, they might start crowing. I have 2 ex-batts that aren't laying and do have spurs, one has spurs about 3/4 inch long. I have found out that it happens when ovaries are damaged and they turn into testicles, but I would like to be able to confirm or deny these rumours about my hens transgender issues. Egluntyne
I have a hen with pretty splendid spurs. Their right ovary atrophies and the left one does all the work. If this in turn becomes diseased, the hen may develop the characteristics of a cockerel, larger wattles and comb, spurs. crowing and even plumage. The ovaries don't turn into testicles though. redhotchick
This is exactly what I was looking to find out. My lovely little red hen stopped laying before Christmas. I thought come spring she might start laying again. Eventually I noticed the spurs, which just seem to get bigger and bigger. So I've given up expecting her to return to lay now, especially after reading Egluntyne's post above. My poor little Hen. I hope she doesn't start crowing....
