K9JO
Well, they came on Friday and I proper love them. They are hysterical! Now I have to work out how to add photos of them here and add the cutey wee chicken symboly signature thingies. I'll do that after I've stopped laughing at them taking turns to be "scared" of a child's wheelbarrow I just have one question though... the breeder advised putting a light in their house to ensure they were getting enough hours of light a day to start laying. We duly did this and they just go to bed anyway! Should we give it up as a nice idea in theory and just wait and see what happens with laying? jade&mike
you dont need a light in the coop, one of mine layed its first egg 2 days ago and the other hasnt stopped laying because its winter, give up on the light and leave them to get on with it in there own time. congratulations on your new girls
Ain't Nobody Here
Welcome to the forum and congratutulations on your new girls . Glad you're enjoying them so much . I wouldn't bother with lights - they should lay enough eggs for a family's purposes even if production does decrease a bit in the winter. It's also good to give them a bit of a break! Ain't Nobody Here
I've cut and pasted what's in my signature (with * added or it would just be my signature!). You'll see how it comes out at the bottom of my post. Have a go at copying this - but leave out all the asterisks - and see if you find that easier! * Maisie * Columbine * Milly * Rhode Island Red * Molly * Pied Suffolk *

jomaxsmith
Hi there, and welcome. I wouldn't add a light - it smacks a little too much of battery farming (they increase egg production by artificially reducing the hours of darkness). I got my hens at POL in Oct last year and although they started a little later than spring pol hens, they were all laying within a couple of months. Have patience and enjoy their little ways!
