AbigailGrace
Anyone have any chicken names..? We are planning on getting 3 girls and would like some names.. I thought of hundreds but i like these the best.. Chick-pea .. aka *Pea* Pixie Bessie I'm not to sure.. We were thinking of getting a silkie as my mum loves them.. Pea A bluebelle.. - Pixie Or between all of these.. -Warren, White star, Daisy belle, Speckledy- (-these are the hybirds. Not names-).. And maybe bessie as a name for these breeds.!.. Can anyone give me any advice on what breed to get of the above.. And names but i think that the top two will stay the same.. .. Thankyou if that made any sence.. Snowy
Can't really give any advice on chicken choice, you will probably find that whatever you decide, your chicken will pick you on the day! And have a look in the Omlet Wiki (link at top of page) - there is a page there of chicken names. I'm sure you will find some inspiration there! AbigailGrace
Oh yes.. Thankyou.. Still any advice on breed..? Could be any but would like a hybird.. Thankyou
Egluntyne
All the breeds you mention will be ideal. Go for the one you like the look of. Bluebelles and Speckledys are very pretty. White Stars tend to be flighty. Warrens are friendly and good layers.
bigmommasally
If you want eggs then you might want to think again on a Silkie, they are not meant to be great layers. My Silkie is 39 weeks old and still hasn't laid her first egg!
laurmurf
Hi AbigailGrace, I have a bluebelle and a daisybelle and a warren - as well as an amber star and black rock types. I think of our hybrids, the bluebelle is prettiest and the daisybelle is 'magnificent' (very grand and madame-ish). Our warren is very homely - not alot to look at but sweet with it. My next hybrid must-have is a Fenton Blue (similar to a columbine), Egluntine has some that I crave! If you are looking for pullets local to York you could consider Glencroft Poultry up near Catterick on the A1 http://www.glencroftpoultry.co.uk/hen_house.htm or Karen Sanderson in Huntington is nearer to you. Her details are available on the Omlet list, I think. She sells a range of hybrids and you could have a look at her stock to help you make your mind up. When we went to Glencroft we were absolutely sure what hybrids we wanted and then we came home with completely different ones! Your name choices are brilliant! AbigailGrace
Hello.. Oh fab.. Thankyou.. I wasn't aware there was anybody in york.. I think we are stuck with these names now and whenever we talk about them we give them names.. Well the silkie was just kinda more a pretty bird and we didn't mind too much about her egglaying but if we went to look at some and found ones we liked then i suppose i would be happy with any.. I think we will try and get a bluebelle and speckledy hens but anything else really.. It's quite hard to sort it all out.. We don't even have the yet but that we will be collecting soon hopefully.. So if anyone has anymore breeders they know of in yorkshire that would be lovely to hear.. We know of a couple.. We were thinking of going to- http://www.storrspoultry.co.uk/ Thankyou.. AbigailGrace
Also.. Is this too small for a grit feeder.. I'm not to sure if the grit will fit through the holes.. Thankyou.. Oh well if not what other use can i use it for.. Can i put anything else in it for the chickens..?
Egluntyne
Storrs Poultry are very good and local to me. I'd ring them first as they tend not to have much available at this time of year. I can also thoroughly recommend **Raw Green Cottages**, near Barnsley. Again, ring first. They have closed for the winter, and have also moved premises so the address details have changed. Their hens are super. I have bought 7 there and have been delighted with them.
AbigailGrace
Yes.. Raw Green Cottages will not be opening until late spring if this is right.. But I agree they are very helpful..
AbigailGrace
http://www.tesco.com/superstore/xpi/7/xpi50342757.htm Is this simular to the organic apple cider vinegar that omlet sells.. Even though it isn't organic.. I'm not sure it's apple either.. Could it be given to the chooks or could it be used to clean out the eglu..? Thankyou

A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Lovely cupcake! Chickens are like babies, once you have them, the pre-picked names may not fit. Fall in love with your chickens to decide which ones you will buy from the breeder, then the names should come to you once you've got a feel for their personalities. Such good fun!!! MedusA
If you want eggs then you might want to think again on a Silkie, they are not meant to be great layers. My Silkie is 39 weeks old and still hasn't laid her first egg! My Silkie (Muggle) is one of my best layers (and my favourite chicken). The other Silkie (Squib) is not such a good layer as she goes broody once a month! I do love my Silkies and would recommend them to anyone who wants cuddly, silly chickens. They are very comical. I would never be without a Silkie despite the fact their eggs are quite a bit smaller than my hybrids' eggs. They are a good talking point though. Egluntyne
The Tesco culinary Apple Cider Vinegar is no good I'm afraid. You want the rough cloudy unrefined stuff, from an equestrian shop if not from Omlet.
AbigailGrace
Oh rite.. Thats ok.. Just thought i would ask.. Does anyone hang mirrors from there run..? We are soon getting there.. I think maybe I've been unlucky with my Silkie, whilst she is really cute to look at she is not at all cuddly, I've only managed to hold her a couple of times and one of them was late at night when she was dozy! She also seems to be a bit of a loner with the other girls, she's not picked on or anything but seems to hang back from the group. We're thinking she may need a few more of her own kind to feel more comfortable?
