tara
Ive got 2 exbats that ive had for 2 weeks and this afdernoon l put them in with my 3 call ducks and 3 runner ducks. My question is the duck water its in small childs pool sitting on the ground with a wooden ramp to it for the ducks to get in.I am worried that they could drown? They seem to all get on, the reason l've moved them in together is that there run is fox proof and where they was it was not so much.I will in the end slowly put them in with the other chickens.Has any one got chooks and ducks together with water and how dose it all work ? Lesley
I keep mine separately Tara so can't help much. I would keep an eye on them to make sure that they are getting on and there is no bullying - from either side I should imagine that the hens will avoid the water - but just keep an eye on them. I don't know if the Practical Poultry forum is back up and running but you may find people over there who keep ducks and hens together. tara
Ah thanks. Was watching them this morning one of my runner ducks pecked the chicken gently but the chicken turned and gave it straight back so l think respect was earned there on both sides. The ducks are more interested in there bed if any thing. We are going to put a camera over the duck pen today as l can keep an eye and keep warm as well
Lesley
That sounds like a good idea - and if your rescue girls are anything like ours they will terrorise the ducks Ours bully the bantams if they get half a chance
sirkusman
I keep my ducks and chickens together with a reasonably sized pond and the only trouble ive had is when Mary the Maran ran into the pond after i was trying to catch her on the first night to put her to bed, ever since i havent had any problems with either side or with the chooks hitting the pond. pickles
hi all mine roam free together in the day but sleep in their own eglu and cube at night. the chickens dont worry too much about the water they tend to have a drink from it though. My duck pond is currently a baby bath from ikea in their eglu run. Hoping to build some sort of fox proof run to house them all soon, as we got an ex batt and ex barny at the weekend yet. In quarantine in my rabbit shed at the min though. ps. when we first got the ducks and the cocks discovered their virility, they did try to bonk the ducks. He obviously knew they were coming into lay. But once he discovered he could bonk the hens he was ok! they only tend to chase each other sometimes when it comes to food. Best to feed them all sep in the morning stops the s"Ooops, word censored!"ping
