madman
wow it's amazing but can i ask how did you make it(instructions). and is it on pavement or on the grass. finally, do you think it would be a good idea to put an eglu and run inside a bigger version of a run like yours as our area has over 10 very inquisitive foxes. so during the day we couldleave them in the eglu run for extra security the when we're there or want to clean it we can let them into the walk in? chelsea
we built it on compacted earth. It has a brick surround with the panels on the top of the brick. We really wished we had done a concrete base though as when it rains heavily the water seeps up underneath. I would really recommend a concrete or slabbed base to anyone doing a walk in run, as not only will this help in the wet - it will also be extra prevention against rats and foxes digging. We do not have a fox problem, so I would maybe wait for other responses - some people build their runs with extra strong weldmesh (which you would require if you have foxes) as otherwise it will get chewed through. If you had a really bad fox problem maybe you could build the walk in run with an electric fence around the perimeter? (just an idea ). I think having the eglu run inside a walk in run defeats the object of having the walk in run doesnt it?.... Up to you, maybe some other folks will come up with other ideas..... madman
thanks for the reply. but i think electric fencing might harm the chickens. just wondering how do you reccomend i anchor the walk-in to the ground?
chelsea
what I meant is to put the electric fence half a metre of so away around the outside of the walk in run. That way the chooks are still safe in the walk in run but cant touch the fence, almost like a run inside a run (as it sounds like you have a real bad fox problem) Our run panels are bolted/screwed into the brick surround. Not sure how other people secure it.
madman
had a look at electric wire pricing. far too expensive! what is your run floor covered with and why did yuo use it?
chelsea
no I havent looked at electric fencing!...like I say just an idea...you may come up with a better solution. I started off using Hemcore in the run, now use aubiose. Its very absorbant, the chicken poos seem to disappear in it and the chooks love to scratch around in it. Composts well also. chelsea
Madman as this is a very public forum you might want to remove your e mail address from your post You can pm on this forum...much safer than e mailing. My run was made up of pre-made panels and not from scratch, so it might be worth waiting for other replies..the mesh on my panels is not strong enough for your run in a fox area. madman
thanks for the tip. and thanks again for all your advice you've been a great help
Redwing
Chelsea has a good point here Madman, you can buy the panels ready made up (eg: on Ebay) so its kind of in between making your run from scratch and buying a complete one in - worth bearing in mind. Redwing
Not yet, the stuff arrived from B&Q today so I can start work building my own. No drawn up plans before you ask! It will be very similar to Yolky's run
