bantams v fulll sized chickens

Recommended Posts

I have 2 flocks who have their own houses but free range together, my 3 pekin bantams live with 5 pure breeds and they all get on fine - little pekin regularly duffs up the big black orp I have!

Difference with mine was I got them (the pekins) from a friend and they were fully mature when they arrived. I introduced them slowly to the hybrids and they lived together fine before building their own larger house and putting the pekins in there and introducing the 5 new pure breeds as little uns.

My banties are a trio and the lad does protect his lassies too.

So, maybe get a trio if you are able to, or get some banties together with some big hens to protect them :anxious:

I have 2 flocks of hens - my 8 big layers & 5 little bantams.

They are kept in 2 seperate pens (see the piccy on my signature - the bants live in the small round area), & I don't think I would consider mixing the 2 flocks as some of my small ones are very, very small.

As for personality, well they are just like the big hens, but smaller really. I guess they may get tamer easier if they are smaller so easier for a child to handle though.

Mine lay pretty well over the lighter months, & the half sized eggs keep us as a family provided with eggs, & I sell most of the ones my big hens lay.
