gillmcc
Has anyone experienced a fox attack whilst their chickens were in the garden with a dog? I leave our dog in the garden when ours are free ranging & assume that a fox will not enter the garden whilst the dog is out. We are in a rural area with foxes near. The girls (with dog!) are only out in daylight.
chelsea
our dog is in the garden a lot with the chickens. We have not as yet seen a fox in our garden, but I cannot really say whether it is because of the dog or "just because they dont come here". I know one forum member has had a fox attack when her dog briefly came indoors from the garden....so the fox had been waiting for the dog to move before it attacked. I wouldnt myself totally rely on the dog as protection, the fox is very cunning.

Jess was sleeping out in the out house during the summer- but its just too cold for her this time of year...
Gamebird
I think it depends on how big your garden is and if the dog can be seen at all times by the fox. I know that foxes watch and wait for an opportunity and will strike if the dog goes out of sight. When my dog who had been lying outside with the chickens decided to go inside the fox who had been waiting in the bushes immediately attacked even though I was still in the garden. karlotta
Apart from the very first morning after my girls arrived when i saw a fox right at the end of our garden, I've never again seen a fox - I have 2 very large dogs (Newfoundlands) and they like to pee near the runs - almost as if to claim the chickens as theirs! We definitely have foxes as i've seen them in front garden and neighbours have commented that they feed them and watch thm in their back gardens!
