Can I introduce larger hens to my existing 3 bantams

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I currently have three pekin bantams, who have been on egg production strike for the past couple of months, albeit, they are very beautiful!. My husband is now insisting that we get another two hens who can guarantee eggs during the winter months.

Only last week he gave them a stern talking to and was overheard giving them the option of egg and chips or chicken and chips!!. (he was only joking.....i think)

Can anyone help me with recommended breeds (the prettier the better!!).

Can I mix bigger hens with the pekin bantams. I would do this gradually by using seperate accommodation for the first few weeks etc.

Thank you so much

Yes I have a right old mixture as you can see.

Take the introductions slowly and you will be fine. I usually give new hens two to three weeks of being enclosed whilst the others free ranged around the eglu. Then I let them out for an hour or so before their bedtime for a week or so. Then by that time everybody usually seems to tolerate each other and I let them out together permanently.

One of my pekins rules the roost when it comes to the cube nesting box. When she wants it she shouts until everybody else gets out including the larger breeds.
