Why are some eggs speckled? I heard somewhere it's because of what the chicken's eat. Also, what about shades of colour - one of our chickens lays much darker eggs than the other two...

I'm not entirely sure, but my chickens lay pale dark and speckled eggs. I think it depends on what breed they are as to what the egg looks like but dont quote me on that

The colour of the egg is a breed thing....and often so is speckling

 

Occasionally it can be caused by spots of blood on the shell, from tiny internal bleeds as the egg passes along the oviduct, and will be peculiar to that hen.

 

Also, very occasionally it can be an indication of a redmite infestation.
