Help please, poorly Hen

Recommended Posts

I have a sick Hen.

This morning when I went out to see my girls Rose couldn't stand. I brought her inside and put her in a cardboard box with some food and water. She has improved slightly and can now stand but is still very unsteady and I don't want to put her back with the others as she may get picked on. She is very tired and quiet, However she has had a bit to eat.

I was wondering if she might be egg-bound as she hasn't started laying yet. If so what can I do for her.

Any suggestions welcome.

Many thanks,

Nicky

Hi she probably isn't egg bound if she hasn't come into lay yet. She could be trying to lay her first egg which could be a softie, this can make them feel unwell.

You've done the right thing by bringing her indoors. Is she eating and drinking at all?

If she's off her food as well it may be worth popping her to the vets as it's unusual for a young hen to be off her legs.

Hope she improves.

Hi,

Thanks for al the advice. She is much better now after laying her first egg. It was quite a large one so I think she was probably just a bit shocked as to what was happening. She was trying to escape from the box about 5mins after laying it and I put her back in the run with the other two.

Thanks again,

Nicky
