Pecking order

Recommended Posts

Well the chooks have been together for 3 days now.

Night times fine, they all go in together and huddle up and go to sleep together, daytime is slightly different :wall:

Gerri will let Suki eat, drink ect gives her the odd peck but is ok. She will not let coco out of the eglu and if she does venture out she chases her back in. :(

Not sure if this is beause coco is so small or what but have decided tommorw to put in another bowl of pellets and water so gerri dosnt think coco is a food threat.

Fingers crossed everything will be ok then.

Hello,

We too are having problems, had our 4 girls just over 1 week and our Sussex Star is making our 2 rangers bottoms bleed wth her pecking! They are trying to avoid her and will hop out of her way but she still manages to get them when they are least expecting it. When I looked in the (cube green) tonight there was a spot of blood on the bars from one of the rangers poorly bots! I am hoping they will settle down but am not happy about it at all :(

She isnt possesive over food, just seems to have a liking for eating their butt feathers? Will it stop?

On a brighter note the poor old Blackrock who she had been concentrating all her bullying tactics on seems to be being left alone now, and she has produced !eggbrown!!eggbrown! for us already.

Hope yours work out their differences soon

They do need to sort out the pecking order, but if one of yours is drawing blood regularly then you may have more of a problem, she's probably got a taste for it now.

Try violet spray, which will disguise the blood and may make her stop, if not you might have to look into stronger methods like bumper bits or Ukadex. The odd bit of pecking is natural but if she's regularly eating their feathers she will carry on, and they could get very sore.

Quick update..... after setting up 2 feeding stations and still no joy we decided to do what the lady we got the newbies from and that was to remove the bully and put her in a seperate cage.

We plan on doing this for tonight and some of tommorow and then at bedtime put gerri back in with the newbies.

They did all eat at the same time earlier, gerri out of the run and the other 2 inside all eating corn within a foot away from each other just being seperated by wire so that is a plus.

Fingers crossed it will sort itself soon :wall:
