Henniversary

Recommended Posts

We celebrated our first henniversary on Sunday by attaching 20 extra metres of chicken wire to the fence at the bottom of our garden. OH risked life and limb balanced on a 1 foot ledge at the top of a 12 ft drop onto a busy road to do this. Hopefully we will now prevent the unplanned visits into neighbours gardens that were costing me too many eggs

Anyway, 7 sacks of pellets, 2 sacks of corn, numerous scoops of garlic powder, poultry spice and bokashi bran along with regular helpings of kitchen s"Ooops, word censored!"s have gone in and 966 eggs have come out

The best result is the way the kids have taken to the chicken's and eaten their eggs. DS1 has become quite the accomplished chicken keeper and does a great job cleaning the eglu each week.

Who wants a manicured lawn anyway  I can't imagine the garden without them :D .

DS1 is 10 years old. He has taken his 'chicken duties' very seriously (unlike his brother and sister who collect eggs but do little else). He is very adept at rounding up the girls and always wants to be involved in their care. This week we did wing clipping together and are currently worming them (he likes to be the one to give the grapes  ).

All the children wanted a pet (I think they imagined a dog or a cat, perhaps even a guinea pig). I held out until last year as I told them they would love the pet for a week and then expect me to do all the work. Chickens were the first animal I came across that I thought I would be willing to look after for them. I think DS1 is now out to prove that I was wrong in my expectations of my children by being truly helpful :D
