Philippa
Hi Everyone, I can't thank you all enough for your advice and support over Tink's moult - I had no idea that a chicken moulting could be so stressful - for the owner! Tink has now turned into a Black Rock/Porcupine hybrid! She lost feathers round her derriere, beneath her wing line and the front and back of her neck - I found the bald patches alarming at first. I have to say that she looks a bit tatty but seems happy enough, although she isn't impressed with the Fylde Coast weather - too much wind and rain when you are only 2/3 dressed. It's so clever the way some of the new quills are turning into fluffy feathers close to her skin whilst others are growing much longer. I'll be so relieved when she has a full compliment again. I almost daren't ask this but when they moult can they lose the vast majority of their feathers or does it just tend to be bald patches? Thanks again for your help. I'd better get back to sitting in the conservatory watching them peck around. Oops that should have said get back to studying! Kind regards, Philippa
Snowy
Ahh bless, glad she is getting her new feathers back. The amount of moult seems to vary - some go oven ready overnight, others only do a patch at a time. As long as they are growing back, all is normal. Egluntyne
I almost daren't ask this but when they moult can they lose the vast majority of their feathers or does it just tend to be bald patches? It depends on their age. They have mini moults now and the, and spectacular moults at other times. It is a normal process and nothing to worry about.....but they can look a little alarming.
